Police infiltrating student organisation in Italy – an appeal

In recent weeks, numerous cases have emerged of police officers infiltrating the structures of Potere al Popolo, an Italian genuine left political party (https://www.fanpage.it/politica/abbiamo-scoperto-almeno-cinque-poliziotti-infiltrati-in-potere-al-popolo-i-documenti-che-lo-provano/). It has now been revealed that the police have also infiltrated student organizations, in particular Cambiare Rotta – an organization of young communists (CR) and the Collettivo Autorganizzato Universitario (CAU) in several Italian cities (https://www.infoaut.org/divise-e-potere/potere-al-popolo-scoperti-altri-3-poliziotti-infiltrati-nelle-nostre-organizzazioni-giovanili).

These are acts of intimidation. They must be denounced and opposed. CR and CAU have launched a petition to demand light be shed on these serious events (Piantedosi, the interior minister, promised to report to Parliament, but never did).

A side note. I participated in a CAU event in Naples in May. I was approached by a guy from the collective who, like others, asked me a lot of questions. A few weeks later, it was revealed that this individual was an undercover anti-terrorism cop. This bothered me. But what disturbs me more is something else. Now that I am back in Naples, I have been talking to some CAU comrades about how the youngest among them might be feeling. They are often first-year university students who have never participated in a street protest before. What the State Police have deployed against them is a textbook strategy of terror. Intimidate them before any action becomes not only possible, but even thinkable. What all these kids have done is denounce the genocide of the Palestinian people when no one else did, fight to defend university spaces from the military, and continue to ask uncomfortable questions.

Now we must show them real, direct solidarity. Because the space they are fighting for is also ours. Please sign and support this petition.

My first book: Rethinking Life at the Margins

After two years of intense work with 13 exceptionally talented scholars, my first book is finally out for Routledge! Rethinking Life at the Margins. The Assemblage of Contexts, Subjects and Politics is not a definite statement around marginalisation but an exercise in post-categorical and processual thinking. Beside my theoretical introduction, where I lay out the assemblage-approach that drives my research around the urban margins, the book is packed with in-depth ethnographies of life at the margins from the Global North and the South, the city and the rural, the body and the virtual spaces of the web. I am proud of this book and, most of all, proud of the people that wrote for it.

I senza dimora a Torino. Una appendice di campo.

Psicofarmaci nelle carceri

Leggo questo breve articolo di ‘E’, sull’utilizzo degli psicofarmaci nelle carceri italiane. Si parla di qualcosa come 35.000 detenuti che utilizzano questi farmaci, per stare buoni, sedati, tranquilli. È il controllo totale dell’individuo politico, ovvero del suo essere cittadino, attraverso l’annichilamento del corpo – come spiegava Foucault. C’è qualcosa di sinistro, in tutto questo. Il carcere è un’aberrazione totale, di per s’è. Quando poi va oltre le mura ed entra dentro così, quando le mura le costruisce tra le ossa e i neuroni, non merita più rispetto. Il carcere non merita rispetto. Va ridicolizzato, nella sua assurdità.

I’m not going to trust his intention till I see his resignation with my eyes.
This is Berlusconi. He creates a fake reality, a simulacrum, where Italy sinks like a boot in the mud. Great and pathetic at the same time. Wonderful: Silvio’s wonderland.

Il Peto di Cota


Guardate bene questo manifesto elettorale. Cosa sta facendo il Cota? Dai, suvvia, non è poi così difficile indovinare. Guardate attentamente la piega labiale, l’occhietto semichiuso, tutto il viso in una smorfia di tensione e piacere. Ma sta scoreggiando! E’ palese. Roberto Cota per la sua campagna elettorale piemontese si è fatto scattare una fotografia nel momentum sublimis della scoreggia. Ah! Cota: una liberazione.

Adesso quella foto l’ha tolta però. A Torino non c’è già più. E’ stata sostituita con un’altra in cui Cota sembra avere 17 anni slavati. La gioventù.

A me sta piuttosto simpatico Roberto Cota. Si è vede che è uno che si è fatto da sè. E poi è bravo. Nel suo programma politico parla di lavoro, federalismo, trasporti e sanità (http://www.robertocota.it/programma.php) senza fare minimo riferimento ai temi che stanno più a cuore alla lega. Ma si sa. Di certe cose – come i rifugiati politici, i diritti delle minoranze e simili – è meglio non parlare. Comunque, tutto questo non è di mio interesse. L’unica cosa rilevante è che Cota ha avuto il coraggio di scoreggiare. Ho anche uno slogan: “Ha liberato l’afflato al momento della foto: Cota merita il mio voto”.
Per concludere. Nemmeno l’ottuagenaria Mercedes Benz parla di rifugiati politici, minoranze, povertà, diritti (d’altra parte si è poi sempre alleata con l’Esercito della Salvezza del Centro Redentore). Allora, nel caso in cui il Cota perda il mio voto – ha pur sempre tolto il manifesto con la sublime scoreggia – voterò Marcello Sbudello. Che mi fa sentire tanto più giovane, e che è poi sempre una buona sintesi di questa campagna elettorale… che preferisco non aggettivare.

Migranti no choice

Nel solo 2007 più di 30.000 tra somali ed etiopi hanno cercato di attraversare il Golfo di Aden, per arrivare nello Yemen, in fuga da guerra e povertà.
I numeri non sono l’unica cosa a far riflettere: le rotte di quello che per certi aspetti è un vero e proprio traffico di uomini, le loro storie, il contesto in cui tutto questo avviene… sono altrettanti paurosi aspetti di queste migrazioni di massa che non trovano spazio sui nostri quotidiani.
Vi propongo un bel report di MsF, intitolato eloquentemente “No choice”, sul tema:
“Thousands of Somalis and Ethiopians risk their lives every year to cross the Gulf of Aden to escape from conflict and extreme poverty. The trip is fraught with danger as people are exposed to violence from the smugglers and receive little assistance upon their arrival in Yemen.
In its report, “No Choice”, MSF has documented the conditions of the perilous journey and calls for increased assistance for the thousands of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants fleeing their home countries”.
